About Scott Bailey
Graduate of the institutions of False Starts, Rare Opportunities, Chances Taken, Lessons Learned, Hard Knocks, and Hard Work. Formal education began in Visual Art, shifted to Psychology, and ended up in Behavioral Neuroscience doing research on the biological underpinnings of taste learning. Having arrived somewhat full-circle, I now work with bright undergraduate students using cutting-edge cognitive neuroscience technology—functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS)—to study synesthesia, a family of rare neurodiversities. A particular focus of my research team is a form of synesthesia called chromesthesia in which persons see colors, textures, shapes, movement, or some combination of these in response to hearing music. We use fNIRS to approach both basic and applied research tied to the experiences of chromesthetes. The rigors of studying chromesthesia are both challenging and rewarding, making it an excellent educational topic as well as an important matter meriting better understanding.
