Background
About Scott Berg
My life thus far has had a singular purpose: to be THE AWESOMEEST TEACHER my students could imagine. When I was growing up in Corvallis, Oregon, I was blessed with incredible teachers, who put their passion and effort daily into making lessons engaging. I didn't appreciate them fully until I lived abroad. When I was 16, my parents moved to Uganda and sent me to a boarding school in Kenya. There I saw the sacrifices some kids had to make to get access to a fraction of what I had been fed on a comparative silver platter. From walking 5 kilometers each way to school, to doing their homework by candlelight, these students were actually earning what I had taken for granted. They deserved teachers who were enthusiastic, but often were met with bored, lethargic, passionless instructors. Since that time, I have been on a mission to become the best teacher I can possibly be. Working towards that, I started teaching in one of the hardest locations possible, knowing that the sharpest tools are forged in the hottest fires. With a literal gang war being fought both inside and outside the school, I managed in two years to improve state test scores by over 20%. This is a pattern that has been repeated in my teaching career. I have chosen challenging locations, earned the respect and trust of the students, and raised standards. I have accomplished this through a concerted effort aimed at Kaizen, continuous improvement. I study my subjects daily, completed a Masters degree in education as well as other optional trainings, work constantly with other teachers to improve our curriculum delivery, gather feedback from students, parents, the administration, and consistently use qualitative and quantitative data to improve my teaching. I talk to students and find out their interests so I can incorporate them into lessons. I give them options and use project-based learning to increase engagement. I work hard to make my lessons outstanding. On this LinkedIn page, you can see some of my outstanding lessons. I encourage you to steal whatever you want from me. I hope to continue inspiring students and teachers for many more years to come!
