Background
About Scott Bryant
I have always worked at newspapers, but I'm a photojournalist at heart, as well as in practice. I am compelled to communicate with images – to help others learn about their communities by bearing witness to events, people, sometimes even history with my camera. Many in this profession scour the globe producing historic work of great social importance. After twenty-five years in the business, I've found my niche doing community journalism, producing daily visual chronicles of life in smaller communities. I am currently settled in Statesboro, Ga. and I cover my home community for the Statesboro Herald. These are challenging times in the newspaper industry, but I feel lucky I'm am still able to practice what I do best. The Digital Age has made things rough for the business of journalism, but it's a golden age for the practice of it. I continue to add new story-telling skills to my repertoire through mulitmedia with combinations of photography, sound, video, blogging, and teaching. I have taught a junior level course in photojournalism at Georgia Southern University as an adjunct faculty member every spring semester since 2007. It's been a challenge, as nearly all of the students, while mostly pursuing degrees in the communications field, will never pursue a career in photojournalism. However, it affords me the opportunity to raise awareness about the process and professional standards involved in my discipline. It's been a rewarding challenge, and I've learned as much from my students as I hope they have learned from me. I'm lucky to be doing what I was born to do. At least that's what one of my former bosses told me. I think he just may be right.
