Background

About Scott Carter

I began work in the mental health/social services field in the spring of 2001 and have been dedicated to the world of human services ever since. I have worked very hard to know the ins and outs of this type of work along with an insatiable appetite for understanding the reasons behind human behavior. I have experience working with trauma, mood disorders, crisis counseling and domestic violence. I have also worked with adults and adolescents with severe mental illnesses, I am well versed in DSM diagnosing. I am highly skilled in the field of substance abuse and consider myself to be an expert on substances as well as addiction. My main area of expertise, however, is working directly with troubled teens. This is where the largest body of my experience lies, I have worked with nearly every single adolescent population. Whether it's severe behavior problems, drug use, severe mental illness or sex offenders, I have direct experience with these populations in various capacities. As a student therapist intern, I learned that I have a love and passion for working with the parents of these teens. I have taught parenting classes, written a parenting eBook and have carried out family therapy. I consider myself to be an expert in this area. I have learned that my success comes largely from two dynamics. First was learning to listen to my gut instincts and trust them. Second is building rapport and relationships with both the parent and the teen. I believe, one hundred percent, that true internal motivation is born when a positive relationship exists. I intend and desire to take my expertise to many areas in the mental health field.
