About Scott Frickenstein

I was born and raised in a small town in northern Wisconsin and grew up loving to learn and lead. I was selected to attend the United States Air Force Academy, and it was my honor to be an Air Force officer for over 25 years. I served in numerous senior leadership (C-level), higher education, and scientific analysis roles and retired as a full colonel in 2015. During my military journey, God gave me the opportunity to earn a doctorate in operations research and master’s degrees in several other disciplines, and I published academic papers in various fields. I consider it a high honor to have worn the fabric of my country while leading thousands of Airmen and serving alongside men and women devoted to integrity, selfless service, and excellence. During my post-military “halftime,” I remembered that one of my military callsigns was “Coach.” I’ve always had a heart for helping people reach their personal and professional potential, whether in athletics, academics, family life, vocation, and so on. I’ve also been deeply impacted by many of my own coaches, mentors, and teachers, so I’ve devoted my “second half” to being a developer of leaders in our increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex, and adaptive (VUCA) context. Now, it’s my honor & privilege to hold time and space for leaders to process the stirrings in their hearts which will lead to significant transformations in their being, belonging, and becoming. I bring my careful learner’s mindset when I focus with leaders on what matters most to them. My clients—some of whom are coaches themselves—feel encouraged by the times we spend together, and they also feel empowered to achieve their goals. I launched Leading by Design to invest in leaders from the faith-based nonprofit realm, and I’m also humbled by the opportunity to work with leaders from many other domains thru WeAlign Coaching. In addition to coaching individuals, couples, and teams, I thoroughly enjoy speaking on topics related to leader development.
