Summary: Moving R&D from lab to prototype to pilot scales and beyond, particularly for difficult scientific projects. Strong suits are chemistry, spectroscopy, synthesis, engineering, and development at lab, prototype, pilot and manufacturing scales. Synthesized and crystallographically characterized the first Mn(V)O complex, and the first water cube. Developed and patented green oxidation catalysts and was a co-recipient of the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award. Designed, funded, built and operated a gal/yr waste vegetable oil biodiesel manufacturing pilot plant. Consulted/worked in natural product purification (frankincense, myrrh), water analysis, carbon nanotube based water & fuel purification, advanced solid state materials, batch and continuous biodiesel manufacturing up to gals/yr. Developed new types of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI/Elastography) for the brain as well as injectable/implantable nanoparticle sensors at Dartmouth/Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical center. Research efforts that serve the common good are both appealing and increasingly necessary. Clean water, medical advances in diagnosis & treatment, alternative/green energy and advanced materials/sensors all meet basic criteria for improving global sustainability. Another piece of this is exemplified by Lean Six Sigma (green belt) and 5S practices, which demonstrate that using well thought out methods for research and production render direct short term benefits as well as safeguarding the resource base and preserving natural capital for many generations down the road.
