About Scott Hecker

My primary role at ICFC is to review our funding opportunities to support nature conservation in the tropics and migratory bird flyways. I advise ICFC to select projects and establish new field partners to protect endangered species, biodiversity, and globally important ecosystems in the Americas, Africa, and Asia. My personal specialties revolve around endangered birds and coastal ecosystems. ICFC's broader efforts work on behalf of all species of threatened wildlife in the tropics and the terrestrial and marine habitats that sustain them. We are highly efficient at directing our funds (and those raised as gifts) to our global field partners, and we were rated as the #1 conservation charity in Canada by the Financial Post for value in dollars spent. Because our core donors pay ALL overhead, every new donation goes directly to our foreign partners. In 2019 we launched a sites NGO, the International Conservation Fund (US) in Boston, Massachusetts. We now spend $10 million per year on conservation actions that will make a clear difference in abating threats to wildlife and their habitats, with the aim of stabilizing losses or reversing declines. Typical projects may include support for: 1) Protecting large existing reserves by increasing wardens to monitor threats and enforce protective measures. 2) Purchasing lands privately to expand reserves, widen buffer zones, and create wildlife corridors. 3) Purchasing field equipment to patrol reserves or restore degraded habitats. 4) Using signage, fencing, and firebreaks to restrict damage by humans, cattle, and illegal fires. 5) Developing new technologies as simple as anti-trawling/artificial reef blocks to restore marine areas. Our geographic area includes all terrestrial and aquatic habitats in the tropics of the Americas, Africa, and Asia, as well as all habitats in the Western Hemisphere that support migratory birds at sites in Latin America and the Caribbean.
