About Scott Penberthy

Scott Penberthy is a world-class builder of AI systems for business and science. He entered MIT at 16, joined the MIT AI Lab, and earned his PhD in AI before leading some of Google’s most ambitious AI efforts. Over the last decade, Scott has built platforms that have reshaped industries and touched millions of lives. He founded Google Cloud’s first Applied AI team, coaching NASA scientists on deep learning to explore the Moon, Sun, and Mars—platforms that later became Vertex AI Notebooks and GKE Deep Learning Images. Inspired by his mother’s fight with cancer, Scott shifted to healthcare AI, creating multimodal “medical mode” systems that combined genomics, imaging, and large language models. These became the foundation for Vertex AI Search and AgentSpace, and led to Google’s first AI Cancer Forum. In 2022 Scott observed a peculiarity, where advances in video AI models could be directly helpful to curing cancer, applying the same basic constructs in 'omics. Entertaining billions with video AI could help cure millions with cancer! Scott went all-in on video in 2023, where data are plentiful, demand potentially intense. Stardust reimagined the $850B creative industry with an autonomous system of 50 "agents", emulating an entire production crew, part of a suite that scaled to $1B ARR within 30 days. Today, as Distinguished Engineer for Google’s Envisioning Studio—an Alphabet-wide lab modeled after the MIT Media Lab—Scott is pioneering cinematic AI, immersive education, and the future of human creativity with AI. From mapping galaxies to decoding DNA to reinventing advertising, Scott’s career is defined by building AI systems that turn imagination into impact at global scale.
