About Scott Spizer

Over the past twelve years, I’ve worked with hundreds of students from private and public schools in NYC and boarding schools in the surrounding area. I attended Yale University, where I played on the baseball and football teams and graduated with a degree with honors in political science. I returned to NYC after graduating, and spent the next decade pursuing a journalism career at ABC News and opening restaurants, including the renowned Carmine’s on the upper west side. These careers were challenging and interesting, but I never felt that they were my “destiny”, the way I was supposed to make my mark on the world. I was told several times I was “too nice” for the somewhat cutthroat industries I had chosen. Finally, I decided that it wasn’t me that needed changing, it was my vocation. So in 1995, I relocated to northwestern Virginia, where I spent two years building a cabin in the Shenandoah Mountains and writing children’s stories. After my years in the woods, the next step in my journey became clearer. I would pursue my life-long interest in teaching.Tutoring and coaching was consistently “the other” thing I did over the years. I finally realized the “other” thing should be “the” thing. Thankfully, my private tutoring and test prep practice thrived — through word-of-mouth referrals and recommendations from schools and parents — and I was soon juggling a full-time tutoring schedule. After years of being a solo educator, I decided to create Origins Tutoring. This would be the company I would want to do business with and the work place I’d want to be part of. I wanted to work with gifted, dedicated tutors with stellar academic qualifications and amazing communication skills who could be positive role models. The goal was to build long-term relationships with them and the families with whom we worked.
