I’ll never forget the day when I worked at a bank just as the financial crisis was hitting full meltdown mode. Employees filed into our regularly scheduled quarterly CEO Town Hall. There, the CEO droned through a wordy, data-dense PowerPoint. The only nod to the tsunami hitting the financial sector was mention of ‘a challenging environment’ that demanded employees ‘be more engaged.’ They were anything but. Instead, they were scrolling through phones, whispering sarcasms to cube-mates, and, no doubt, furiously searching job sites.
