Background
About Sefya Mitchell
As a dedicated fourth-year student pursuing an undergraduate honours degree in Social Anthropology, my academic journey is deeply intertwined with my passion for food advocacy and activism within global black communities. For the past year, I've had the privilege of serving as a Career Peer Educator at York University's Career Centre. In this role, I've provided personalized guidance to students and alumni, assisting them in navigating their career paths through one-on-one consultations, resume and cover letter crafting, and the cultivation of professional online profiles on platforms like LinkedIn. In addition to my work as a Career Peer Educator, I've also served as a Front Desk assistant, where I've honed my customer service skills by effectively communicating information about the Career Centre's services to students. This experience has afforded me the opportunity to excel in organizational and administrative tasks, from managing phone calls and responding to emails to coordinating career counseling appointments. Driven by my passion for activism and food justice, I seized the opportunity to join Black Creek Community Farm as a placement student in fall 2023. Within the Development and Communications department, I played a pivotal role in coordinating the end-of-year giving campaign, leveraging storytelling to inspire community members to support the organization financially. Additionally, I gained valuable experience in donor database management and contributed marketing strategies to promote farm produce during seasonal farmers' market sales. Engaging in hands-on work alongside the market garden team, I participated in various tasks, including seeding, harvesting, and packaging vegetables, demonstrating my commitment to making a tangible impact in the community. Through these diverse experiences, I have cultivated a unique skill set that blends academic knowledge with practical expertise, positioning me as a versatile and impactful contributor in any endeavor I pursue.
