About Sera Waters

Sera Waters is an Adelaide-based artist, writer, and lecturer. She is a graduate of the South Australian School of Art has a Masters of Arts (Art History), University of Adelaide (2004-06), and is currently a PhD candidate at University of South Australia. After being awarded the Ruth Tuck Scholarship (2006) to attend the Royal School of Needlework (Hampton Court Palace, UK) Waters’ art practice has been characterised by darkly stitched meticulousness. Her black-works and handcrafted sculptures reveal an enduring interest in colonial Australian history and have been shown in Talente, Germany, Sensorial Loop, the Tamworth Textile Triennial, and Nadlewerk at Galerie Handwerk, Germany. Recent solo exhibitions include Dark Portals, at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, University of Western Australia, 2013, and Ghostscapes at Fontanelle Gallery, Adelaide, 2014. Her work is in the Cruthers collection of Women’s art and the Art Gallery of South Australia collections. Her recent fascinations have developed into an exploration of repetitive crafting; a theory Waters has been explicating through conferences, lectures and publications. Waters is a studio member of The Incinerator, Thebarton, exhibits locally, interstate and internationally, and teaches art history and theory at Adelaide Central School of Art.
