About Serena Lim

Serena is a passionate educator who has been teaching English and communication skills for more than 20 years in local tertiary and post-secondary institutions such as SMU, NUS and Temasek Polytechnic. Her courses include functional English and business communication modules, as well as English for academic purposes. Serena believes in empowering her students to express themselves effectively in both written and spoken forms, in a manner that is appropriate for their communication contexts. Her students are encouraged to regard communication skills as essential lifeskills, and to adopt an audience-centric approach. Further information: Serena has also has been actively involved in the development of course curriculum, assessments and teaching and learning materials. She was involved in educational staff development with the Learning Academy at Temasek Polytechnic. She employs active learning-teaching strategies to better engage students, who come from both academic and applied education backgrounds. A reflective practitioner, she constantly seeks ways to improve her pedagogy, to enhance her students' engagement and experience in the learning process. She enjoys engaging with all her students, both young and the young-at-heart. Serena's keen interest in the study and teaching of the English language is reflected in her academic and professional qualifications, through the English Language courses that she pursued during her undergraduate and honours years, the Masters Degree in English Studies from the National University of Singapore, as well as the formal teacher-training Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) programme that she attended at King's College, London. Serena enjoys travelling, writing and reading, and especially draws great inspiration from many gifted faith writers. Like any true-blue Singaporean, food also has a special place in her heart.
