Although I maintain a general practice and handle divorce in all its forms, my practice focuses on child custody cases involving sexual abuse of children, physical abuse of children and domestic violence, personal injury cases involving abuse and civil rights violations, administrative actions against professionals involved in protecting children, juvenile dependency cases and appeals involving child custody where child abuse and domestic violence are involved. EARLY WORK AS A POLICE OFFICER I first encountered child sexual abuse while working as a juvenile officer for the Berkeley Police Department. As a result of working with runaways, I discovered that they were either running away from an abusive environment or running to sexual exploitation on the streets. It was at this time, during the late 1970s, that we discovered organized groups of people seeking out children for sex. At the time the word “pedophile” wasn’t even a part of the American lexicon. Soon after, I began working with the California legislature to bolster laws protecting children and tightening the policies of government entities responsible for protecting them. I also began writing about the issue. The result was my textbook, a "how-to" on investigating incidents of child sexual abuse and exploitation. TRANSITION TO LAWYER I found that as a police officer I was unable to achieve the kind of protection that children needed and decided to attend law school. I earned my J.D. in 1993 from the Oakland College of Law. Today I litigate and provide expert testimony on child abuse and domestic violence cases, and work with co-counsel across the country on issues relating to child custody and family violence and on behalf of crime victims.
