About Shade Abdul

Shade is an architect, planner, educator and PhD researcher with a keen interest in the strategic planning of places, towns and cities. She is a Principal Planner within the planning policy team at Luton Borough Council where she is working with colleagues to prepare the new Local Plan.She was previously a director at Deft.Space, an interdisciplinary practice covering architecture, research and participation. Key projects included regeneration masterplans for local authorities, community-led revitalization and participatory action research collaborating with communities.She is a Postgraduate Researcher at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. Her PhD explores critical spatial practice at the intersection of race and regeneration. A primary aim of the research is that it informs best practices in redevelopment processes and urban policy. Further to her research practice, she teaches BA Architecture, Vertical Studios at Central Saint Martins. She is also an External Examiner for Professional Practice Architecture (RIBA Part 3) at the University of Westminster.She is a design review panel member for the London Borough of Hounslow, the London Borough of Newham and Urban Design Learning. She was a member of the Southwark Land Commission.
