About Shahini Somasri

A working professional with over 3 years of non-profit experience through a combination of practicum and professional roles. I hold a background in Social Work from Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson), with a minor in psychology. Currently, I am a Skills Instructor at March of Dimes Canada (MODC), where I facilitate a pre-employment program for people with diverse abilities. The program emphasizes the development of soft skills in an interactive environment, and I work diligently to ensure that the curriculum is both aligned with learning outcomes and accessible to participants. I also represent the program at various outreach events and have built a partnership with Developmental Services Ontario (DSO) Dufferin–Peel, which has supported broader program awareness across Peel Region.Previously, I worked at Newcomer Centre of Peel (NCP) as a settlement and mental health counsellor. In my settlement role, I assisted with applications to social assistance programs and I worked with newcomer youth to help navigate their post-secondary pathways by assisting with OSAP applications, and providing tailored academic options. As a mental health counsellor, I provided short-term counselling using CBT practices, talk therapy, and grounding techniques while also coordinating referrals and conducting outreach. Outside of social services, I also loved working in a fast-paced retail environment! I was proudly employed as a store associate at Winners (affiliated with TJX Companies) for 5 years. I enjoyed helping customers achieve their “Fab Finds” goals by answering their inquiries, delivering exceptional customer service, and gained a deep understanding of store operations. I have a diverse range of experiences, spanning from working in non-profits, social services to retail and customer service Throughout my career, one skill has remained constant and is truly fulfilling: empowering individuals to reach their fullest potential - with a smile. Moving forward, I am eager to continue advancing my career by making a meaningful and positive impact on others.
