About Shakeel Garda

I am a law graduate with a passion for archival research, heritage, people, and the application of the law as a tool for preservation and protection of humanity. I graduated from Wits University, having completed an LLB which followed a BA in Media and International Relations. I hope to use my entrepreneurial, legal research and social science skills to contribute to strengthening justice in South Africa. I have a track record of community work, having been involved in student leadership as President of the Muslim Students Association Union, and community activism, which has influenced my worldview and passion for change. My fellowship with Auwal Socio-Economic Research Institute and subsequent internship with Equal Education set the foundation for the career I hope to begin in the legal profession. My legal interest lies in the way in which property acquisition and land restitution can dignify the lives of South Africans today, as a sustainable means towards achieving social justice. However, intellectual property, estate management, social media and cyber law, amongst other areas, are especially interesting to me. It is upon my generation to harness the data and resources available today, positively impacting the future, for the good of society.
