About Shakyra Tyus

As an aspiring data analyst and health professional, I've always been passionate about health disparities and science but didn’t always start here. Early on, I worked in customer service. I enjoyed assisting customers with their needs and found joy serving and helping others within my community. I learned the essence of hard work at this level while attending school and noticed how monthly budgetary meetings were more engaging with statistics, numbers, and visuals. Quickly understanding the importance of data literacy and how it drives understanding. Shortly after, I was given the opportunity to enhance my communication, evaluation and data management skills through my epidemiology course work. While working as an epidemiology assistant, I assisted with surveillance reporting on syphilis cases and updated case reports using SendSS and Accurint. With these opportunities, I was exposed to various types of research, which revealed the power of data and its significance to society. Fast forwarding to now, I currently work as a clinical research coordinator at Emory University. I enjoy being the bridge within and across my research team when it comes to recruiting, patient visit scheduling, and data management. With my training in epidemiology, I am interested in opportunities to engage more with data in order to support health care initiatives and to decrease health disparities. Data management and analysis skills I currently possess are REDCap, SAS, R Programming, while learning and improving skills in Python, Tableau, and MySQL.
