About Shane Barrett

I am a GIS professional with over 25 years’ consistent employment experience in Queensland. During my career I have mastered many Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software packages and solved countless business problems. My most recent GIS forte involves very large vector dataset management plus extracting features and adding value to remote sensed information. As the manager of the QGC Geomatics Data Team, within my first year at QGC I migrated the GIS datasets from disparate collections of survey & design data, with no QA controls, to an industry-leading, structured corporate database. QGC’s GIS master database contains the full lifecycle for millions of CSG assets displaying three dimensional connected networks representing roads, gas & water pipelines plus much more. Over the last 5 years I have become QGC’s Subject Matter Expert (SME) for remote sensing where I spec, procure and deliver numerous datasets each year from various platforms including satellites, planes and Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS). These datasets are analysed and interrogated to extract specific, targeted information to enable timely business decisions and reporting to government bodies. During the same 5 years I have also developed, implemented and maintained a fully attributed road network dataset that is used for navigation apps and the monitoring of vehicle speeds for HSSE (IVMS). This dataset has been extended to include other CSG companies and is used by a CSG industry wide body (Safer Together) with over 30 companies employing this dataset to deliver safer and more efficient travel, while also removing Land Access breaches. I also established the Dial Before You Dig (DBYD)/ Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) membership for QGC back in 2008 to protect our buried assets are remove HSSE risks. This process is now fully automated processing several thousand requests per year with zero third party strikes to QGC assets to date as a result.
