About Shane Byers

Following 4.5 years at Penn State University to achieve two Bachelor of Science degrees in Computer Science and Systems Analysis Mathematics with an additional minor in Statistics, I have been employed with SMS Group since June 2017. SMS Group, a leading partner in the world of metals, updates, replaces, and newly creates automation software for steel-making plants across the globe. While attending Penn State as a student, I was also employed for 3 years as a Teaching Assistant (and subsequently as the Senior Teaching Assistant) for an online introductory computer science course with 200+ students each semester. The course was aimed towards students attending school for non-engineering majors but were still interested in the basics of programming. Once employed with SMS Group after finishing my degrees with Penn State, I joined the planning stages for an 18-month project in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. The project, led by the SMS Group headquarters office in Düsseldorf, Germany, intends to update and replace the current 30-year-old automation system currently in place. Throughout the development process, I have been located in Germany for 5 months to closely work with the other team members as we build the custom-made software for this particular project. In my free time I enjoy working on personal programming projects, traveling, photography, and watching hockey.
