Background

About Shane Fraser

Shane Fraser is the Manager of Grid Transformation at EPCOR Distribution & Transmission Inc.(EDTI). In this role, he leads and coordinates our teams and consultants in investigating and supporting the modernization of the electrical distribution grid to address the changing needs of our customers. In his previous role as EDTI’s CES Manager, Shane led a team of engineers, designers, and planners who connect, upgrade, or adapt customer electrical service connections. His extensive experience working with customers has provided him with a field level view of the challenges our customers are facing with implementing new technologies. Customers are increasing their adoption of distributed generation, installation of batteries, purchasing of EVs, and moving to the electrification of building heat. Customer’s needs are transforming and Shane is spearheading EPCOR's efforts to meet those new needs. With a degree from the University of Alberta in Civil Engineering, Shane has worked on various projects as a consultant and utility engineer. Some of the more notable projects he has been involved with include the South LRT Expansion, the Station Lands (EPCOR Tower) development, EDTI's Demand Managed High Speed EV Charging pilot, and inventing the EDTI Novel Distribution Transformer. He also authored EPCOR's Customer Connection Guide and developed EPCOR’s Aerial Asset Plan, which guides the connection of new services in EPCOR’s service territory, and the ongoing maintenance and operation of the EPCOR overhead power system, respectively. Shane is personally interested in the electrification of building heating, and transportation electrification. Outside of work, Shane spends much of his time renovating his 1970s bungalow to get it to near Net-Zero standards. He has already realized a 70% reduction in energy consumption through building envelope improvements and installing an 8.65kW solar PV system. He also recently made the move to driving an electric vehicle (EV) and is looking to increase the solar on his home to meet the EV’s energy needs.
