About Shane Young

Dr. Shane Young is a multidisciplinary researcher, activist-scholar, and creative thinker. He serves as an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work and the Academic Coordinator for the Indigenous Knowledge and Experiences Certificate Program at Toronto Metropolitan University. His research centers on critical Indigenous studies, urban Indigenous identities, colonialism and decolonization theories, and Indigenous research methodologies. Shane’s doctoral work explored how digital platforms, such as social media, Instagram, and TikTok, shape and sustain Indigenous identity formation and resurgence. His research also delved into the potential of these digital spaces to support Indigenous futures and revitalization efforts. With a robust background in social work, Shane has extensive experience in both educational and community settings. He has worked with diverse populations, including those facing systemic marginalization, across areas such as Deaf culture, homelessness, mental health and addictions, child welfare, and Indigenous communities. Shane has ancestral ties to both the Mi'kmaw and Newfoundland settler communities. Originally from the southwestern coast of Newfoundland, he has called Tkaronto home since 2006.
