About Shannon Letscher
My inquisitive nature drives me to better understand the world we live in. For instance, why are there massive rocks in the middle of New York City? How did they get there and where are they from? The Earth leaves clues about its history and it’s just waiting to be uncovered. A career in geosciences fulfills my passion to expose the mysteries of Earth. As a geochemist I have the opportunity to examine a wide range of samples from calculating the age of rocks from the Turkana Basin in Africa, to determining the isotopic ratio of boron in 450 million year old Brachiopod shells.Although I would love to be out in the field looking at rocks, most days you will find me where the real magic happens- in an ICP “plasma” lab. In the lab, I manage and run an ICP-OES and ICP-MS. Operating these machines combines my knowledge of geology and my passion for problem solving to get consistent and reliable data. There is still much to discover about the Earth, and I am thrilled to be part of the journey.
