About Shantel Blakely

Shantel Blakely is an architect and architecture historian by education with substantial experience in academia and in the development and production of public programs in a cultural institution. She is interested in architecture, art, and education; in design foundations and rethinking the architecture curriculum; in art history and the humanities. With extensive knowledge of contemporary architecture and historical themes, she is capable of developing thought-provoking case studies in architecture. These sensibilities are currently being channeled into her role as assistant professor of architecture, teaching history and architectural design. In addition she has several writing projects in progress. Curious by nature, Shantel has thrived on excursions into neighboring fields, including contemporary art, culinary arts, and journalism. As public programs manager at Harvard Graduate School of Design, Shantel drew on experiences as an instructor in academia and as a practicing architect to manage the development and production of ten cycles of its semesterly public event program, applying an experimental and visitor-centered approach to over 250 public lectures and a dozen academic conferences. The achieved objective was an integrated, popular program where there had been a simpler event series. In the same role she assisted in a consulting capacity with scores of other public events. She has meanwhile pursued a deep interest in architecture and philosophy as an independent postdoctoral scholar. Her academic experience includes 2 years of teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level (liberal arts, art school, and professional school). Her current research and book project focuses on influential late adherents to idealism in the modern movement in architecture and art.
