About Shaswat Garg

As a kid, I loved taking apart gadgets and toys to understand how they worked. This curiosity led me to pursue a bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering from Delhi Technological University (DTU). During my second year, I discovered my passion for robotics and AI, sparking a deep love for the field. The idea of creating a robot with human-like movement and thinking abilities excited me, setting me on a journey I continue to this day. Through hands-on robotics projects, I honed skills in vision-based path planning, safe reinforcement learning, and mastered tools like ROS2, Python, C++, and MATLAB. I served as a research assistant at top-notch universities like IIT Delhi and Toronto Metropolitan University, contributing to the development of AI-based control algorithms for Continuum robots. After graduating, I landed my first role as a robotics intern at Orangewood Labs. There, I crafted simulation test beds on MoveIt and Gazebo, and built a tool (RoboGPT) that slashed programming time for new cases by 50%. I enhanced the system with audio and textual awareness using Langchain, computer vision, and ChatGPT APIs. Taking a short break, I'm now back in the student seat pursuing a MASc at the University of Waterloo. My thesis focuses on Vision-based Path Planning and Control of Aerial Manipulators using Safe Reinforcement Learning.
