Background

About Shaun Lehmann

I currently work as Senior Complaints, Appeals and Misconduct Coordinator at Macquarie University where I investigate and respond to student misconduct, with a focus on commercial contract cheating (people paying others to complete their university assessments). I'm particularly interested in developing methods for data-driven detection of contract cheating. So far I have been using the R statistical programming language for this, but hope to explore Python-based options in the future. I have developed several tools in R for the scalable detection of contract cheating. In addition to the detection of contract cheating, collusion, and other forms of academic misconduct by technical means, I also process end-to-end referrals from markers and concerned academics. This involves analysis of the referral, gathering and evaluation of evidence, communicating concerns to students, and drafting and issuing investigation documentation. In this role I also design and deliver workshops on academic integrity to both students (how to work with integrity) and staff (how to detect and refer integrity matters). Prior to this, I worked as a university lecturer in the areas of human genetics, anthropology, and critical thinking and reasoning, and also as an academic writing and skills advisor. I also have significant experience developing e-learning resources, and have published two books on academic writing (see publications). I'm handy with the R statistical programming language. Earlier in my career I worked as a teacher of English as a second/other language, with a speciality in academic language. I am proudly Noongar, belonging to the Kinjarling/Kendenup areas of Western Australia.
