About Shawna Henderson

Self-professed building science wonk, working in the field of energy-efficiency and housing since 1992. Passionate about building science and energy efficiency and how collaboration and cross-pollenization can make the residential construction industry a bigger, better piece of the sustainability puzzle. I wear the Blue House Energy CEO hat the most these days. BHE is dedicated to online training in building science and energy efficiency. Our mission is to create great on-line training materials for the home renovation and new construction industry and then get them into the hands of those who can distribute them to people working in the field. We know what we’re good at doing and the value that we can provide to the industry. We’re not interested in building out end-to-end solutions in dozens of regional markets. Our focus is to provide great training on a stable learning platform into the hands of aligned regional and national partners who want to deliver great learning solutions to their programs. Under my Bfreehomes hat, I work with eight to fifteen clients each year on sustainable and accessible design and consulting projects from deep energy retrofits to net zero energy new houses. Bfreehomes keeps my boots on the ground and in the field doing applied research. I have presented at regional and national conferences on everything from deep energy retrofits to solar thermal system design. I am also the author of books related to sustainable housing (The Cool Climate Solar Home Design Manual, 2010, The Canadian Solar Home Design Manual, 2009). Was part of NZE Coalition's Education Action Team, sat on the Commission for Environmental Cooperation's Trilateral Green Building Task Force, currently member of CHBA's NZE Retrofit Working Group.
