About Shayne Smith

In my current position with the City of Santa Monica Department of Transportation, I serve as a transportation planner project manager on the Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) team. My primary focus is on planning and executing transportation initiatives aimed at improving safety and enhancing the city's infrastructure. Before joining the CIP team, I gained valuable experience as a member of the development review team. In that role, I provided support at the public permit counter and reviewed commercial and residential projects for compliance with the municipal code. Over the course of my tenure, I successfully reviewed more than 500 development applications and oversaw all applications for the city's newly established parklet program. In addition to my normal responsibilities I wasI also tasked with transitioning transportation permits to an exclusively online platform during the pandemic. Taking this responsibility head-on, I developed and implemented three online application portals, paving the way for a seamless and efficient permit process. Overall, my expertise in transportation planning, experience in development review, and proficiency in streamlining processes through technology make me a valuable asset to the City of Santa Monica Department of Transportation. Beyond my professional and academic pursuits in urban planning, I also have a passion for photography. As a photographer, I primarily shoot Football, Gymnastics, and Softball. In addition to shooting athletics I am also experienced in the following photographic styles: architectural, astrophotography, creative, landscape, micro, and portrait.
