About Shelagh Pyper

Prior to starting Fuse, Shelagh was the the Director of DiscoverE a large science outreach program at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, winner of an ASTECH Award for Excellence in Science Public Awareness and the GoogleRISE Award. In this role she: provided strategic direction, training and performance management for a team of 30 student staff who delivered science outreach programs in over 50 communities, reaching youth each year; led the large program through important changes (a complete policy revision, safety program implementation, and adjusting operations to reach new audiences, locations and goals) while it tripled in size and geographical reach. She also worked with a diversity of partners from industry, community agencies and remote rural locations to secure donations, facility space, community buy in and participation from hard to reach target audiences. Drawing on her diverse experience in hands-on education, public outreach and program management (Shelagh also worked as an educator at the Telus World of Science Edmonton, was a 4-H Ambassador, and ran U of A Ringette Camps and French Nature Camps) she is now working as a consultant in science communication and nature education. Recent achievements include the development of interpretive signs for the Nature Conservancy of Canada, project management for the website and publications of the Alberta Centre for Reclamation and Restoration Ecology, and work with Ducks Unlimited Canada. In addition to conservation and nature education Shelagh is also passionate about healthy child development and in particular the intersection between nature and children's development. She is now a trainer in the" HIGHFIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development" and in the development of "Outdoor Play Spaces with a Sense of Wonder". No matter what she is doing, Shelagh is enthusiastic and honest and finds ways to connect people with the knowledge they need and the people who can advance their goals.
