About Shelby Gilson

I’m a geological engineering student planning to pursue my master’s with an interdisciplinary study of Humanitarian / Geological / Mining Engineering. I’m passionate about working with mining communities and using both technical knowledge and social skills to work with people. I’m enthusiastic about fieldwork and working in different environments. I’m interested in non-traditional alternatives to mining such as urban mining and phytomining. My dream job would be working for an international mining company in a social responsibility and community engagement role. My experience includes international mining research, geological research, and seven years as a self-employed esthetician. I had the opportunity to spend a month in Zambia summer 2024 examining the geophysical characteristics of lead contaminated soils. I also had the opportunity to assist in sedimentary fieldwork and analysis of paleorivers in Nine Mile Canyon, UT. Additionally, I conducted an independent study examining chromophores in tourmaline and had the opportunity to present results at a research symposium. Lastly, my experience as a business owner has given me the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills and demonstrate self-discipline, time management, and a strong work ethic.
