About Shereen Daniel

I graduated from Michigan State University in April 2021 with my B.S. in Biology and a minor in Philosophy. After graduation, I worked with PopHealthCare in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Community Health Advisor. I outreached senior Blue Cross members and assessed their Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) needs, and further provided them with information on free and affordable community resources. In December 2021, I began a full-time position at Honor Community Health, a Federally Qualified Health Center. I worked as a Community Health Worker, where I outreached patients from our clinic and provided case management services. As part of these services, I helped remove barriers to patient care by providing monthly follow-ups, transportation assistance, appointment scheduling, homeless resources, and affordable housing resources. During this time, I also began a volunteer mentoring position with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Detroit. In the fall of '23, I began my first MPH in Environmental Health Sciences, where I am interested in exploring the connections between environmental exposures, mental health, and community health. During the summer of '24, I started my internship at U of M's Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention as a research assistant. I worked with my PI Dr. Sokol to design a pilot study to measure the impacts of an unconditional cash transfer program in Pontiac, Michigan. This internship solidified my interests in injury prevention, primarily in firearm violence prevention. In the fall of '24, I began my second MPH in Health Management and Policy, where I am interested in program implementation and management. During this time, I continued my work from the summer as a qualitative research assistant through U of M's School of Social Work. In this position, I am translating research findings into public-facing materials and creating resource guides for underserved communities in Detroit. Moving forward, I hope to continue my injury and violence prevention work through research, advocacy, program implementation and evaluation, and leadership.
