About Sherran Clarence

I am a Senior Lecturer in the Doctoral School at Nottingham Trent University, where I design and develop a tailored and holistic doctoral researcher education, training and development programme for PGRs. I am also a Senior Research Associate in the Centre for Higher Education, Research, Teaching and Learning (CHERTL) at Rhodes University in South Africa, and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I research higher education teaching and learning and doctoral education and writing development, and have designed and facilitated a range of workshops and short courses for doctoral scholars on undertaking their doctoral journeys from start to finish. From 2015-2016 I was an AW Mellon research fellow in CHERTL, where I focused my research on undergraduate teaching in Law and Political Science. The focus of my research has been teaching in ways that enable and foster cumulative knowledge building within the disciplines, especially through curriculum and pedagogy and teaching writing differently. This research culminated in my book, Turning Access into Success. Improving university education with Legitimation Code Theory, published by Routledge in 2021. I currently hold a C2 rating from the National Research Foundation (SA). I am currently the Managing Editor of Theoria: An International Journal of Social and Political Theory; and former Managing Editor of Critical Studies in Teaching and Learning (CriSTaL). I am also an Associate Editor at Higher Education, Research and Development (HERD) and I serve on the editorial board of Teaching in Higher Education. I am an associate member of the LCT Centre for Knowledge Building at the University of Sydney and a member of the International Doctoral Education and Research Network (IDERN).
