About Shih-Ern Yao

I am a gynaecological surgeon based in Melbourne, Victoria who specialises in the management, treatment and prevention of gynaecological cancers. Born and bred in Perth, Western Australia, I studied medicine at the University of Western Australia where I graduated with honours in 2005 and spent a number of years gaining experience in a wide variety of different specialities before committing myself to specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology. After four years of general obstetrics and gynaecology training at King Edward Memorial Hospital, I moved to Melbourne, Victoria in pursuit of further training in advanced gynaecological surgery. In 2015, a year after my relocation, I accepted the Gynaeoncology fellow position at Monash Health and gained fellowship with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists the year after. Over the next six years, my intensive surgical training in the subspeciality of gynaecological oncology took me from Melbourne to Brisbane, Queensland and onto London, UK where I completed clinical surgical fellowships with the Queensland Centre for Gynaecologic Cancer and the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. My wide skill set encompasses all facets of women’s cancer surgery, with particular proficiency in advanced minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic-assisted techniques. In addition to my operative skills, I have also published and presented research in journals and conferences on a national and international level and have ongoing involvement with research projects through Monash Health. I am passionate about surgical education and have the privilege of being involved in the training of junior medical staff, general RANZCOG trainees and gynaecologic oncology fellows at Moorabbin and Casey Hospitals. I also hold an Adjunct Senior Lecturer position in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with the School of Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University.
