Background
About Shirin Malekpour
I lead interdisciplinary research projects in the area of planning and governance for sustainable development. Trained as an engineer, I started my professional career in the private sector, working in large water and wastewater infrastructure projects across Africa and the Middle East. My passion for bridging physical and social sciences to enable sustainable development drove me to do a Ph.D at Monash University, where I studied long-term policy design and strategic planning under uncertainty. My recent research centres on new and emerging approaches to governance for sustainable development, such as goal-based governance through the SDGs. I have won an international award as one of the top 25 young scientists in the world in the field of sustainable development. I have been a scientific advisor to the UN and various governments on implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). I was selected by the UN Secretary-General as one of the fifteen members of the Independent Group of Scientists who wrote the 2023 Global Sustainable Development Report. In my other role, I head up the PhD program at Monash Sustainable Development Institute. Our growing PhD cohort currently consists of about 30 students from a diverse range of backgrounds who work on interdisciplinary and impact-oriented PhD projects.
