About Shiro Ryu

Now serving as a Professor at School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences of Meiji University. • Worked at SoftBank HQs (2009-2016) in charge of design and deployment of long-haul DWDM systems over 100 Gbit/s per wavelength. • Has been serving as a part-time lecturer of a lecture entitled “Transmission Theory” since 2005 and a lecture “Optical Fiber Communications” since 2012 at Waseda University, Japan. • Active in academic societies including IEICE Japan and Senior Member. • More than 8 years experience in the management of research group in SoftBank Telecom R&D Laboratories (former Japan Telecom R&D Laboratories) regarding next generation photonic network research with eminent results that are recognized in academic societies • Three years development experience regarding terrestrial optical systems in KDD Headquarters • Two years experience about intellectual property rights (IPR) in KDD Headquarters (1995-1997). • 10 years intensive research activities on coherent optical fiber communication systems technology in conjunction with technologies including optical submarine cable systems, optical amplifiers, wavelength-division multiplexing, and optical measurement in KDD R&D Laboratories (1985-1995). • Based on a strong background of coherent optical fiber communication technology, published a book entitled “Coherent Lightwave Communication Systems” from Artech House in 1995 • Listed in “Who’s Who in the World” and “Who’s Who in Science and Engineering” of Marquis since 1998. • Filed 33 patents in Japan, 14 patents in the U.S, and 5 patents in EPC (Europe) in optical fiber communication fields.
