Background
About Siddharth Seshan
I am currently working as a scientific research at KWR Water Research Institute in the Water Treatment & Resource Recovery team. Based in the Netherlands, KWR focuses on 'Bridging Science to Practice', working at the interface of science, business and practice. Our strength lies in the translation of our scientific knowledge into applicable, practical solutions for end-users in the Dutch and international water sector. Specifically, my work involves supporting the (waste)water sector in their digital transformation and Digital Water strategy, by interacting with various relevant stakeholders such as IT professionals, process technologists and management. My research and project work involves the development of deployable smart water solutions using process modelling and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address pertinent data and process related challenges within water and wastewater infrastructures. I am also pursuing a PhD at the Delft University of Technology on the topic -'Near real-time control of wastewater treatment processes for the reduction of nitrous oxide emissions'. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a harmful greenhouse gas with a very high global warming potential and wastewater treatment plants performing biological nitrogen removal are now considered a potent source of it. Within my research, process/biokinetic models are being calibrated to better unserstamd the complex processes behind the production of N2O emissions. Furthermore, AI models, such as deep learning models, are also being trained for the prediction of N2O emissions, thereby leveraging the power of new cutting edge techniques, that can be subsequently used to test real-time control strategies.
