About Simon Alford

I am the Head of Department and Professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, in the College of Medicine. Our Departmental focus is in Neuroscience. The department carries out research across a broad spectrum in neurobiology with expertise in Neurodegenerative disorders, Neurodevelopment the Neurovascular sytem, as well as Motor and Sensory systems Neural circuitry, Synaptic biology, Cell Biology of the Neuron, and Ion channels. We are an expanding department seeking new faculty across all aspects of Neuroscience. In my own laboratory we seek to understand mechanisms of short term synaptic plasticity in which synaptic function adapts in real-time to the circuit function of the synapse. We are particularly interested in signal transduction pathways that modulate neurotransmission and the role that short term adaptation and facilitation play in shaping the complex output of motor systems.
