About Simon Bakke

It was a bit alienating being a kid who cared about climate change in the late aughts. But after a few hundred practice rounds explaining that extreme heat won't just hurt penguins, I felt like a science communicator from a young age. Now, with over six years as a communications and digital marketing professional at environmental nonprofits, I've become a Swiss army knife for targeted campaigns to protect our changing planet. I'm skilled in campaign planning, brand management, press relations, graphic design and videography in Adobe software, website management, social media content creation, and copywriting. Working with policy analysts and science staff, I translated complex land use regulations for supporters and journalists to prevent Northwest Washington's biggest industrial zone from increased fossil fuel impacts. In 2021-22, I led a cross-organizational communications team to drive grassroots action and secure some of the nation's strongest climate- and health-friendly building codes in Washington state. I built an Instagram and TikTok presence at a $2.5 million-per-year community nonprofit, with videos getting tens of thousands of views and organically building an engaged regional following of thousands with practically zero ad budget. Nearly three-quarters of the country is concerned or alarmed about the climate crisis. I see my work as shifting our cultural and political understanding of what's possible.
