About Simon Carter

Three years living in Delhi changed my life. I had just left my job working for Immigration, and was following my partner as her passion led her into a India-based volunteer role. After the initial months of culture-shock and trying my hand at a variety of volunteer jobs, I stumbled into English teaching. My first student was a Korean mother looking to improve her English skills. I had no idea how to go about teaching and my cobbled-together lessons were somehow held together by my patience and adaptability. From that Korean mother, my students grew through word-of-mouth and I quickly realised that I had some valuable things to give; acceptance, encouragement, a desire to help, and a mastery of English. Returning home three years later, I knew I wanted to teach English as a career. I started teaching two weeks after gaining my qualification. Through teaching I am able to tap-into my creativity to aid, motivate and encourage learners to reach their language goals. I love being able to incorporate music, food, imagery and stories into my lessons as unique forms of engagement- and was extremely humbled to receive a Teaching Excellence Award in March 2020 for my efforts! My specialities include teaching General and Academic English as well as IELTS and other exam preparation courses. I also design curriculum and assessments, maintain and update records, and give specific feedback to my students. However, my greatest joy is that my role has allowed me to care, support and guide people towards achieving their major life goals such as employment, education and, ultimately a greater sense of inclusion in society.
