About Simon Crane

I am currently an innovative Deputy Head who looks to build relationships with all three vital components within our school; staff, parents and pupils. Each day presents a new series of fresh challenges, but my approach is always underpinned by an unswerving faith and belief in the unlimited potential of young people. I look for the good in others and I am a gentle man in education. After qualifying with an Honours Degree in English from Rhodes University, I worked initially at Carter High School in Pietermaritzburg before moving to the UK and serving for eleven years at Milton Abbey School as Head of Communication and Media Studies and as an Assistant Houseparent in Hambro House. I moved to Michaelhouse in South Africa in 2007 and am currently the Deputy Head at HeronBridge College in Johannesburg. I have a particular strength in Pastoral Care and have much experience in running programmes and building relationships in this area. I speak regularly at Conferences on the importance of relational education and have presented on this for the IBSC (International Boys’ School Coalition) as well as for ISASA (Independent Schools’ Association of Southern Africa) a number of times. I have co-written three English textbooks and have been a senior sub-examiner for the IEB, assessing final national Matriculation English exams since 2010. I am a passionate teacher of English, a sports’ coach, an accomplished Deputy Head and I am a gentle man in education.
