Background
About Simon Doble
A curious kid on a global mission, sometimes labeled as an innovator and social entrepreneur. I’m here to prove that you can build a business and make a profit without sacrificing purpose. I was challenging the system long before I understood it. My head teacher once wrote: ‘Simon is a natural-born leader; he just needs to decide whether he’s going to lead people into doing good or bad.’ It took me a while to discover my 'good’ but looking back, I only wish I’d started sooner, bolder, and with more heart. I’m a proud father and my kids are my heart and soul. But I can’t turn a blind eye to injustice. That’s why I’m committed to ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive. In 2011, my life took a 180-degree turn when I read an article in Time Magazine about energy poverty. It was a wake-up call to the reality that millions live without basic energy. It was my “light-bulb” moment which sparked a fire in me. I’ve been on a mission to bring light and other beneficial solutions to those living in darkness ever since. A year later I founded BrightBeam, a social enterprise providing solar solutions for extreme humanitarian circumstances. In 2016, SolarBuddy was born—a charity delivering solar lights to children and communities who live in energy poverty. It grew to impact over 1.5 million people worldwide, helping improve education, health, and opportunities for kids everywhere. I’m grateful that our mission has resonated with so many. Gaining recognition with awards like the Australian Good Design Award and DFID Humanitarian Design Award, or being featured by outlets like ABC News, Forbes, and podcasts such as The Turnaround Mindset and 99% Invisible is a nice bonus. In 2023, I passed the torch at SolarBuddy and shifted focus to Barefoot Citizens—a group of social enterprises proving you can do good while thriving. My goal? A world where people and nature can thrive together, and I’m confident we’ll get there. Some call me a troublemaker with a mission, but I see myself as someone who helps people while keeping things interesting. I’ve built a system that channels my energy and the endless stream of ideas constantly brewing in my head. Having faced many challenges, I’m eager to share the lessons learned. Keynote speaking, mentoring, writing, and being around inspiring people is what fuels me. Ready to spark your lightbulb moment? Let’s connect and build something amazing! Learn more at simondoble.com
