About Simon Kincaid

Qualifications: BA (Hons), BSc (Hons), PgC LTHE, FHEA, MCIOB. I am currently working for a design-planning-build company based at Cromford Mill in Derbyshire. This is a varied role and marks a return to industry after a sizeable gap. I was previously (2013-24) a senior lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, teaching undergraduate and MSc students. My main areas were building conservation, fire safety, building pathology and structures. I was also the departmental placement coordinator; taking the academic lead for placing about 100 built environment undergraduates into year-long placements every year. My first degree was in Geography, which I read at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London; and my early career was in Technical Training at the British Council. I then re-trained as a carpenter; this gradually developing into more general construction work, with a particular emphasis on refurbishment and conservation projects. Building on this experience, I was subsequently given the opportunity to train in-post as a structural engineer; doing structural appraisal, analysis and design, and a large amount of building surveying/reporting. I have also inspected a large number of listed buildings on behalf of the Peak District National Park. I studied for a degree at Sheffield Hallam between 2009 and 2013 and graduated with first-class honours. I was subsequently asked to lecture at the University. While working at Sheffield Hallam, I was very fortunate in being able to pursue my research interest (all aspects of fire safety in historic buildings) and published a total of 7 journal articles (see https://shura.shu.ac.uk/). I contributed an article to the 2019 IHBC Yearbook, and presented at IFSM and RICS conferences. I also appeared on BBC and ITV news commenting on the Notre Dame fire.
