Background
About Simon Masterton
Simon began his career in London where he worked as a freelance singer, actor, voice teacher, translator and script reader. Employers included organisations such as the Royal Shakespeare Company (translation), the Guardian (culture sub-editor), Focus Features (script analysis), multiple colleges and drama schools, and the Swingle Singers (singing). Upon moving to Australia, Simon continued to teach privately, in high schools and in adult education, while further developing his singing portfolio, performing with the Song Company, the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Cantillation. He works as a voice actor, specialising in narration. In 2018 Simon completed with Distinction an MFA in Voice at NIDA, which opened a new chapter in his career. On placement, he spent time teaching and coaching at the University of New Hampshire, California State University Long Beach, and Toi Whakaari in Wellington, NZ. He is a certified teacher of Knight Thompson Speechwork and trains speech and accent teachers worldwide. He is currently undertaking a Master of Education at UNSW to deepen his understanding of the intersection of research, policy and practice. He now has a thriving voice, music and dialect teaching practice in Sydney, Australia, where he teaches or has taught at NIDA (MFA, BFA, Open, Corporate), WAAPA (BA Acting and BA Musical Theatre), Actors Centre Australia, Sydney Actors School, Sydney Theatre School, and Excelsia. He also runs a private studio for voice, accent and singing students from the performing arts, business, and academia. Simon has also been an Associate Editor of the Voice and Speech Review, the Routledge-published journal for the academic voice community
