Background
About Simon Miller
My main area of interest is data analysis, with a focus on intelligent methods including data mining, fuzzy logic and evolutionary computing, and the application of these for knowledge discovery with real-world data. In recent work with CESG (GCHQ) I have collaborated with cyber security experts in order to design and implement data elicitation exercises, perform analysis on the resulting data to reveal important insights into the relationships between experts and the processes involved in expert decision making, exploring methods of supporting decision making and communicating the research findings to cyber security experts at CESG. Additional work has included representing subjective human assessments using general type-2 fuzzy logic, preparation of project proposals, supervising laboratory sessions for the Advanced Robotics/Autonomous Robotic Systems modules and the Robotics Summer School, PhD student supervision, organising and running weekly seminars within the IMA research group, participating in a sandpit funding event (as part of a group whose pitch was successful) and designing and developing a fuzzy logic toolkit for the R programming language. During the course of my PhD I gained experience of conducting research work with a consortium of commercial partners. This work involved creating an interval type-2 fuzzy model of a supply chain, and a genetic algorithm which is used to find good inventory plans. The PhD also included a number of training courses on subjects such as intellectual property rights, research methods and teaching. I also taught a visual web development module to first year undergraduate students which proved to be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. I am familiar with a variety of programming languages and tools, in particular R, C, C++, C#, Java, Weka, MATLAB, ASP.NET, SQL Server, MySQL, as well as systems analysis and design.
