About Simon Nichols

I am an approachable, organised, adaptable and enthusiastic professional with over 14 years’ experience in clinical and lifestyle-related research and evaluation, healthcare delivery, product innovation, and project management. I have managed the successful completion of a portfolio of large-scale, commercially funded, government funded, and charitably funded research projects. My clinical areas of expertise are cardiovascular disease and sarcopenia. My research is service-user focused and has involved quantitative and qualitative research methods to improve access to healthcare. As a Senior Research Fellow, I have used these interests and skills as well critically analysing available data to identify meaningful research opportunities and develop a successful programme of research with an international network of collaborators. In doing this I have secured research funding from organisations including AstraZeneca, the NIHR, Research England and private industry. I have experience in delivering projects on time, within budget, and reporting findings to relevant stakeholders. My role as a Senior Research Fellow is diverse and includes line management, looking after the professional development of my team, conducting systematic reviews, developing clinical guidelines, designing research protocols, applying and securing research funding, obtaining relevant ethics approvals, overseeing study execution, chairing meetings, and writing and reviewing reports and peer-reviewed journal articles. I have previously held the position of Scientific Officer for the British Association for Cardiovascular Prevention Rehabilitation, Executive Committee. This involved developing guidelines for healthcare professionals, advocating for improved access to cardiovascular rehabilitation, and organising and chairing national conferences to bring like-minded professionals together to improve current systems. I have also been an Editorial Board member for the British Journal of Cardiology. My most recent research role was as a Senior Research Fellow at Sheffield Hallam University.
