About Simon Orton

I work with clients facing acute problems to help them find the best route through their immediate issues, and to help them deal with the consequences. Typically, those consequences involve internal and external stakeholders – including senior management, regulators and customers – often across numerous jurisdictions. I also advise on related governance, management responsibility, culture and controls issues and, increasingly, sustainability including litigation and regulatory risks – and I sit on Freshfields’ Global Sustainability Leadership Team. As co-head of the firm’s Financial Institutions sector group, much of my work is with financial institutions (such as banks, payment services providers and asset managers), though I also regularly work with financial sponsors and corporate clients on complex disputes and investigations, which are often multi-jurisdictional. Clients come to me for help with sensitive, high-profile matters, often involving complex financial markets or products, controls issues (in areas such as whistleblowing, AML/ financial crime, sanctions, and cyber-security controls), large scale consumer issues, or shareholder or M&A disputes. I regularly speak and write on these topics and I edited Freshfields book on Financial Services Investigations and Enforcement (third edition).
