About Simon Owino

Experienced Research Professor with a demonstrated history of working in the higher education industry. Skilled in Parasitology, Research Design, Molecular Biology, Cell Culture, and Genetic Engineering. Strong education professional with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) focused in Infectious Diseases from The University of Georgia. Current research mainly focused on immunological crosstalk within the fetal-maternal interphase during malaria infection. To accomplish this goal, I harvest and culture primary trophoblast cells, which are placental cells in contact with maternal blood, plus use immortalized cells line BeWo, used as mimics for primary trophoblast. In addition to above, I use a mouse model designed to understand course of malaria infection during pregnancy. Most current interest is in addressing role hypoxia plays in influencing pregnancy outcome, as well as determine role of matrix metalloproteinases during placental malaria. Additionally, i have robust training and experience in vaccine design, development and testing using different animal models in both low and high containment facilities.
