About Simon Pain

Simon is a passionate technology leader with over 25 years experience designing, building and managing digital products that millions use every day. Currently as the CTO and technical director at Grumpy Sailor, I’m working at the intersection of art, creativity and technology to build immersive experiences that make a lasting impact on the world. Recently as CTO of Play Travel by Afterpay, I worked to once again get us traveling to destinations far and wide. Prior I held senior technology positions across Australia's most prominent media companies, leading the design and engineering of some of Australia's best known digital properties, including smh.com.au, domain.com.au, abc.net.au, news.com.au, goodfood.com.au, traveller.com.au, carsguide.com.au and moshtix.com.au to name a few. Seeing the video streaming wave coming before Netflix arrived in Australia, I helped build an award-winning set of live and on demand streaming products for Foxtel covering 200+ channels, including a first of live streaming the Olympic Games, and have continued to dip in and out streaming ever since. I started my career in 1995 seeing the potential of the web and multimedia and its ability to fundamentally change how we live. My first few years were in startups, at the time a term yet to be coined, from these beginnings I had found my passion - the love of creating technology and innovating. Specialities include agile and lean product development, architecture and engineering leadership, hands-on/off development, team and stakeholder management, technical governance, technical operations, strategy development, digital transformation or modernisation, and consultancy.
