About Simon Waller

I'm passionate about improving our knowledge and understanding of global flood risk and set up JBA Risk Management back in 2011 to focus on helping insurers better understand flood risk though use of our maps, catastrophe models and analytics. A pioneer in developing new approaches to national scale flood risk mapping, I work with governments too and managed the development and delivery of one of the world's first public facing national flood maps for UK Environment Agency in 2002. I actually discovered the insurance industry by accident back in 2004 and have been working with primary insurers, brokers and reinsurers ever since. I'm proud to have taken JBA from a small start-up company to one of the world's most respected flood risk management companies in a very short space of time. A tech nerd at heart, I'm constantly seeking innovative ways to improve what we do. An early adopter of the use of GPUs to parallelise or flood models (back in 2007), I'm currently fascinated by the potential for machine learning to help us do things better. When I set up JBA Risk Management, my ambition was to produce flood data for the globe. Having achieved this somewhat earlier than planned in my career, I've added a few more ambitions to the list - so watch this space!
