About Simon Weffer

I currently serve as the Director of Community and Belonging for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Northern Illinois University. Responsible for helping build a sense of community for 18 Departments, 5 Centers, Faculty, Staff and Students. I am also an Associate Professor of Sociology with a joint appointment in the Center for Latino and Latin American Studies. I am a member of the Society of Senior Ford Fellows, as well as a member of the Board of the ACLU of Illinois. Previously, I was the Founding Sociologist at University of California, Merced (2006-2012), where I worked to hire colleagues across the School of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts and lay the foundations for undergraduate and graduate programs in Sociology as well as interdisciplinary programs. My specialties include: Urban Inequality, Social Movements, Protest, Collective Action, Race and Ethnic Relations, Race/Ethnic Identity, Political Sociology, Latina/o Sociology. My most recent work has been examining Race and Inequality in Museums.
